I wonder if anyone knows if you needed to be apprenticed to be a Hatter. My relatives were hat makers in England and came to the US in the 1840-50's. Their names were the Walker's from Coalville & Worthington and the Waterfield's from Coleorton.
Anyway to find apprentice papers?

I've seen mention of Hatters apprentices thro'out the censuses. Have one (a silk Hatter) in the Family in Bermondsey.
If you Google Hatters Apprentice guild, you may find info, there are many references to appies on the net. (did you see Mad Hatters Apprentice?)Last edited by Waitabit; 07-06-2010 at 3:55 AM. Reason: typo
