It probably wouldn't help a great deal Jilly
It would give the names of his parents, any previous name(s) of mother, and father's occupation but it would not give their ages.

Hi Jilly
The LDS site seems to be up and running okay now. They have a centre in Bristol, and one in Yeovil which is a bit closer to Taunton
Here are the details for Yeovil
Yeovil Family History Centre
Lysander Road
Forest Hill
Yeovil,
Phone: 01935 426817
Hours: T 10.30am-4.30pm; W 10.30am-1.30pm, 6.30pm-9pm
If you give them a ring and tell them the batch and film number in post 6 they should be able to tell you whether it's in stock or how long it will take them to order it.
Best of luck
Graham

Kingsholm Iron Foundry was on Sweetbriar St - so a possible place of work for John.
Have you looked in any of the Trade directories? (Kelly's, Pigot's) John snr the carpenter might possibly be in one.

Thank you Graham and Grisel, I could pop over to Yeovil on a Wed evening after work, that really exciting. I thought John must have worked somewhere close to where he was living, I'll start searching the trade directories too. I'm determind to find John Lewis!!

IF he is the John bapt 1799 (for now, I'd go with the hypothesis he dropped quite a bit off his age at marriage) then there might be two siblings:
Children bapt in 1790s to a John Lewis and Maragaret:
SARAH LEWIS
Female Christening: 24 AUG 1794 St John, Gloucester, Gloucester, England
MARGARET LEWIS
Female Christening: 06 NOV 1795 St John, Gloucester, Gloucester, England
JOHN LEWIS
Male Christening: 24 MAR 1799 Gloucester St. Aldate, Gloucester, England
So far, the only John and Margaret marriages I can find are in Bristol. Not impossible but there are several to choose from ... so let's hope we can find a more obvious one nearer ...

This is a long shot, but at least gives you one slightly-prioritised John Lewis to check out among the hundreds.
The genealogical database, including index to wills, of the Glos Record Office is online at:
http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/in...rticleid=17142
Included is an 1836 will of a John Lewis, carpenter, of Hill.
Hill is near Berkeley. No obvious connection.
However, he is at least a carpenter, so worth checking to see if he might be John's father.
Good luck
Sonia

1. Looks unlikely that John Lewis of Hill is connected:
For some Hill parish registers there is:
http://www.scribes-alcove.co.uk/
Age of John Lewis at burial in 1836 is 72. So far, so good; still in time frame to be your John's father.
BUT
Looks like this John (and wife Ann) have a son Thomas bapt in Hill in Feb 1799. Which clashes with your John bapt 1799 in Gloucester itself. (IF that is him, of course ....)
2. Any chance that John and/or Margaret (having children in 1790s) are still alive on 1841/51 census?

Blimey Sonia you have been very busy. I'm going to have a look through the info that you've unearthed. Thank you very much for your help.
