I have found my 2 Great Grandfather's military service record. He joined on 24th April 1877. On his Attestation papers it says "Did you receive a Notice and did you understand its meaning?" After which is written "Yes" What is meant by a "Notice" was he conscripted??

Good question Shaun, This one I'd like an answer to too. I have my great grandfathers Attestation papers from 1878 and it says the same on those.

Hi Shaun,
I believe this question is standard on all attestation papers. Basically it means has the man been told what he is signing up for and he must answer yes before he can be enlisted.
