With the assistance of others above, I viewed the results on A and FMP. The transcribers must have had a field day:
A has them transcibed as Wellard with Jane transcribed as "Lum"
FMP has thenm transcribed as Wallard with Jane transcribed as "Lean"

Views of the original schedule and I can understand the problems.

With this breakthrough, I can find the family in 1861 - without Jane, but that I knew.

Perhaps it's worth mentioning that when the 1841 indexes failed to produce your WOOLLARD family I found them the old-fashioned way -- by reading through the pages for Rayne.

Honestly, Kerrywood, while it was obvious to do so, I hadn't thought of that alternative. I tried it out for 1851 but no success in Rayne. In 1861 they were found in Bocking, Essex, which is a neighbouring community to Rayne and probably only a few miles from where Thomas was born in Halstead around 1816 I think it most likely that he and his family in 1851, which would have included:
    Thomas born 1839
    Jane born 1841
    Walter born 1848
    George born 1849
are likely in the Bocking area, so that's my next plan of action

Well, folks, I'm still searching for her family - with Jane- in 1851 census but no luck. The family moved from Rayne some time in the 1840's and had 3 children between 1848 and 1852 - Walter [1848], George [1849] and Charles [1852]. All 3 were born in Felstead, Essex

The next child was Priscilla [1854] who was born in Bocking.

The family would presumably be in Felstead for the 1851 census. A name search produces nothing on A or FMP. I tried an address search on FRMP for Felstead and got no results.

Was Felstead not enumerated in 1851?

    Thanks, Kerrywood.

Can you give a reason as to why it is missing from TNA?

Would copies still be retained at the Essex Records Office or is it now from my standpoint a moot point?

Sorry, Colin, it's reckoned to be permanently missing (I've no idea why), and it won't be at the ERO.

Lots of census pieces are missing, so please don't take it personally.

You can find out which census pieces are missing by searching the TNA catalogue, or (if you prefer) you can look at Find My Past (no sub necessary for this).

So, we'll never know where in Felstead the family lived, but at least parish records exist and I can still find records of the family
