Folks,
My great grandmother,Elizabeth Jane Smith, was married in Geelong,Australia in 1859,her age is 24,born Warminster, father Robert, a blacksmith, mother Elizabeth (maiden name looks like Mayfield,Maxfield ).I don't expect anyone to find birth records for a Smith, however I am hoping that someone may have a lead on Mayfield to steer me in the right direction.
Eric

Maxfield
Checking an 1851 census transcription for Wiltshire, I find NO Mayfields in the county but plenty of MAXFIELDs who are located primarily in Longbridge Deverill and Warminster. The first parish is available in transcription on FMP but Warminster is not - can't remember if it's on the IGI. Longbridge is a small village a few miles south of Warminster which was a market town. pw

Another look at the 1851 census shows an Egbert Robert Smith aged 29 as a blacksmith born in Longbridge Deverill. Also in the household is his brother Arthur, aged 18, another blacksmith. In Warminsinter is an Elizabeth Smith born c1833 in Longbridge, a dressmaker's apprentice.
Searching in a different way, I came up with 51 Elizabeth Smiths born 1834 plus or minus 5, of which there were only 2 in the area of Warminster, one the girl mentioned above. The other lived with her father who was not Robert and not a blacksmith. Let me know if you want the references. There were 13 Smiths born in Longbridge Deverill on the 1851 census. pw

Folks,
I have had ISP problems recently so to find your replies was a welcome change. In some family notes her father is referred to as Egbert so i will now go back and look at all this again.
Thank you both for your assistance,
Eric

Smith/Mayfield
Folks,
I have gone back and checked all of this.
Went back to IGI and could only find a marriage of Robert Smith to Elizabeth Barnett in 1821,so i skipped back to around 1790 to find birth of Elizabeth Maxfield, sorry no baptisms for Warminster or Longbridge Deverill!!There are several submitted entries which will be worth investigating via the county records office.
As the LDS Beta site seems to be getting better coverage i tried that, and i now know that Elizabeth Maxfield was born 10 Jul 1791 to Stephen and Elizabeth, has 11 siblings and all records are extracted from parish registers. The marriage in 1821 is correct, she had previously been married to Samuel Barnett in 1811,though i have yet to find what became of him.
Pays to go back and have another look.
Eric
