It's a good chance Irene is the land lady Thomasin as she is the only other female in the family.
In 1911 Leonie age 31 is with William Blakely 40 Theatrical Box Office Manager born Chelsea
Children Leonie 5 and William 1 both born Fulham.
Married 6 years 2 children born 2 alive.
Plus 1 servant and 1 boarder.
Address 3 Princes Terrace Bayswater.
RG14 piece 69 SN 231 TNA copy right
BUT can't find a marriage for them!
Maybe in 1901 Leonie had dreams of a stage career and was using Antonie as her stage name.
Still no closer to finding Jane Sarah Quilter's birth and marriage.![]()

I've just been scouring the country for them!! FreeBMD has William down as William Edward B Baseley - no wonder I couldn't find them. I think Baseley must be right, because I spotted their daughter Leonie Baseley's birth in 1905 on FreeBMD, but was unable to find her in 1911 either.

Strange - he was Blakeley in 1901 (Theatrical Clerk, b. Chelsea so definitely him), Baseley for his marriage and the birth of Leonie junior, then reverted to Blakeley in 1911.

As Mutley said earlier the Quilter name seems to be centred around Essex and they are driving me crazy. I have been over and over BMD's and censuses so often my head is spinning.
What it boils down to is -I am no closer to a solution. If we take Jane at her word then we must assume her birth wasn't registered.
If we think she may be lying then the nearest birth for a Jane Quilter was in Essex in 1847, parents Abraham and Elizabeth who she is with in 1851 age 5 but in 1861 she is a domestic servant with the Fewell family in Felstead Essex. I cannot find her in 1871
There are so many possibilities. Quilter may be her name from a previous marriage. It may be her maiden name and she married prior to 'marrying' Lee or she adopted the name as her own for whatever reason. So many notes and cross referencing has only resulted in me loosing the plot.
As Mutley suggests, a birth certificate for one of the children may throw up more clues - or confusion!

Jane Sarah Quilter as the mother of Reginald Robinson Lee Came from 2 different sources, The Australian Grandson of Reginalds Brother Herbert & the Encyclopedia Titanica website also although maybe not a very reliable source other family members, when I first started my research I looked at the Quilters in Essex they do go back a long way but as yet have not found a link with the Leicester ones, I do sympathise Christanel All the Quilters are frustrating & hiding when ever I look for any of them especially Jane Sarah, If I could just find the record of her marriage the cert might shed some light.
She is listed as a schoolmistress im not sure if thats the same as teacher but im wondering if their might be any mention of her in any school records & if she is a teacher im assuming she must have gone to some form of college or university.

Given that William Lee and Annie Louise Jackson are both born in London, perhaps Annie's relationship to William as sister-in-law on the 1871 census means step-sister.
Since no Jane Quilter is apparent prior to 1871, could Quilter be Jane's middle name, perhaps taken from her mother's maiden name?Adele

Another suggestion - Jane may have been illegitimate. There is a marriage of Sarah QUILTER to Charles Henry JACKSON, upholsterer, at St Pancras Parish Church on 20th September 1847 (father Henry QUILTER, deceased), and this couple baptised a daughter Annie on 18th May 1851 at St Mark, Shoreditch (Charles still an upholsterer). If Sarah had already given birth to Jane Sarah under her maiden name, Jane and Annie would be half-sisters. Annie's age is a little out, but it does vary on the censuses.
All speculation, but who knows? The Quilter name must have been important to Jane as she passed it on to her daughter Irene.
In the light of Nightryder's other thread, perhaps I should mention that the witness to the JACKSON/QUILTER marriage was Alfred CLARK.Last edited by Thomasin; 17-05-2010 at 10:33 AM. Reason: added Alfred Clark
