Im looking for a birth of Jane Sarah Quilter born Leicester C1847, I can find a few Sarah Jane around the right date on Ancestry but not Jane Sarah, she married William Lee born London C1846 sometime before 1870, their first child son Reginald Robinson Lee (of Titanic Fame) was baptised in Bensington Oxfordshire in June 1870.
William was a school teacher & the 1871 census has them living at the schoolhouse & National school in Bensington, the 1881 has William as schoolmaster at St Judes school Portsea Hampshire, I think ive found a birth record For Reginald in Wallingford Oxfordshire but cant find either a birth record for Jane Sarah or her marriage to William I would like to send for her birth cert to hopefully find her parents names, I know she belongs in my family somewhere, just not sure where, can anyone help.

Jane Sarah Quilter

It is strange how in 1901 she calls herself Jane Quilter Lee, a widowed school mistress in Portsmouth with daughter Maria (Marion?) Evelyn Lee.
I cannot see her birth but not all births were registered in the 1840s. The Quilter name, around about that time, seems to be centred around Essex. I'll keep looking.

Well, I can't find her at all before her marriage. Where did you find the name Quilter?
It's interesting that in 1871 and 1881 Annie Louisa Jackson is with them - 'sister in law' in 1871 and 'aunt' (to the children) in 1881. In desperation I wondered if Jane Sarah had actually been a Jackson, but the only William Lee/Jane Jackson marriage is June quarter 1869, Crickhowell.Sadly, our dear friend Dorothy (alias Thomasin) passed away on Sunday, 17th. February, 2013.

What is also strange is that in 1871 Annie Louisa Jackson is living with them. She is an unmarried sister-in-law born London.
Normally that would make her Jane's sister but if so, her surname should be Quilter.
She is still with Jane in Portsea as an Aunt.
Where have you found Jane's maiden name from? I would be inclined to get at least one of the children's birth certificates to confirm her maiden name. Marion's is easy to find on Free BMD.

What is interesting about this census record on ancestry is that two corrections have been submitted for
Jane Lee's surname. Jane Picknell and Jane Gilpin.

Just because I wanted to I followed Leonie in 1901 and this is the best match but an odd surname.
1901 RG13/936/46/40
12 Church Road, Palmiera Ave, Hove, Sussex
Leonie Antonie, 24, single, Parlourmaid domestic, born Southsea Hampshire.
She is in the household of John N Malleson, retired solicitor.
Now if this is your Leonie (and the age and birthplace are correct), where did the Antonie surname come from? Ancestry have it as Auterie and given the handwriting it could be that also.

One of the daughters, Irene D Lee, seems to have married in 1900, as Irene Daintree Q Lee, James Ainsworth W(illiam) Webster, Kensington 1a 256. Could she be the absent landlady?
In 1911 James and Irene Daintry Quilter Webster are living at 27 Stonor Road, West Kensington, London with son William Joe Ward Webster (11 months), born at Shoeburyness. James is a Captain, Royal Army Medical Corps.
