I have recently seen that there is a possibility that John worked for the British Government as consul in Syria/Turkey. Does anyone know if there is any way of finding out if this was true please?

You could try searching The London Gazette to see if there is an appointment recorded there.
Did he leave a will? If he did how is he described in the will (i.e. occupation or status).

Thanks for the advice - will check in the London Gazette. Do you know where copies of the London Gazette are held please?
John actually died in Aleppo in 1765, so am not sure where any will would be if there is one. I know there isn't one in the PCC however.

See Kerrywood's reply, above. You may have to try a few different searches.

If he came from a well-to-do family and died abroad, you might try his familiy's home parish and see if there is a memorial to him in the local church.

Another descendant of John Bobbit
Rachel: I live in Canada and am also a descendant of John- Richard - Ann (Smith) Bobbit. I have quite a bit of info on the family as far back as John. I have not been working on the tree for a while so would have to look up details. I have just retired so will have the time to look at it again. I wanted to see if you would respond before I start digging.
