Hello everyone,
I'm afraid I've put the cart before the horse somewhat as I've already posted a query - and received some very helpful replies. So to put matters right :-
My name is David and I live in a little village on the banks of an estuary in South Wales. I've been researching my family history on and off for about eight years. These days I'm confining myself to the most direct members of my family and also those of my wife. After posting a gedcom file on a well known genealogy website I suddenly found myself with dozens and dozens of relatives that I had never heard of.
I'm amazed at the variety of the forum boards here at B-G and am really looking forward to delving into many of them in the pursuit of this fascinating, absorbing and sometimes frustrating hobby.

Hi David

Welcome to Brit-gen (again !) Glad you have already experienced the friendly help available on the forum. Doesn't matter what order you do things, the help will still be forthcoming !
A little village on the banks of an estuary sounds idyllic,

Hi David. and welcome
My wife originally, came from near Swansea [Penllargaer - hope I've spelled it correctlty] - came to Canafa and had the mis-fortune to meet me. We've now been married 38 years.
Her maiden names is - you guessed it "Jones', so I've got my work cut out for me when I start on her side.
All I can say is that this is the most griendly, informative site that you are likely to encounter
Cheers
Colin

A slight typo in the last line and too late to edit - the 'g' should be an 'f'

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum. I also had ancestors from Wales - (Yes there were one or two Joneses). I'm sure that you'll get plenty of help and advice here ... and there's someone to listen when it all gets too frustrating.
