    Default Bradleys leaving Australia

Thanks to everyone for their support in helping me locate the Bradleys in Australia. I really made excellent progress as a result of your efforts - much appreciated.

    I'm stuck on this question:
Is there a website which shows passengers lists for ships returning from Australia to England, please?

The following passengers would have been travelling together very probably in 1890, and very probably departing from Brisbane:
    Mrs. Sarah Bradley (age 27)
    Edward Bradley (7)
    Alfred Bradley (5)
    Edith Bradley (2)

Queensland State Archives has immigrant ships but not emigrant ships. Anc***** shows a 'Mrs. Bradley' travelling on the Oruba from Sydney but that was a slow multi-port journey and I think that Sarah Bradley would have wanted to get back to England as quickly as possible as she was pregnant with a 4th child at the time. The 4th child was born in England in January 1891.

    There is - Ancestry 1878 - 1960.

    Unable to find them though.

    Thanks, Procat.

I have had a look on Ancestry. I don't think that it's a complete listing, unfortunately.

I looked at the Brisbane Chronicle issues for March to September 1890 and there seem to be numerous ships leaving Brisbane bound for London that are not on Ancestry.

I believe that then as now,...pregnancy didn't afford one the right to a quick passage. She would still have had to wait for the right Passage to be available.

You're right, of course. I guess I meant that she probably would have taken a ship with the shortest journey duration between Brisbane and England.

From reading through the Brisbane Chronicle archives, the Brisbane departure (to London) dates for passenger ships are as follows:

    Jumna dep 13 May (passengers)
Taroba dep 5 Aug 1890 (steerage passengers)
Dorunda dep 21 Aug 1890 (coal only?)
Tara dep 2 Sept 1890 (steerage passengers)
    Jumna dep 4th October 1890

It would be great to find the passenger lists for those ships.

    Found two others:
    Merkara dep 12 June 1890
    Almora dep 15 Jul 1890

Ancestry only has records for 1891 onwards for ships from Brisbane.

Don't worry, folks, I don't think the passenger lists exist. Thanks anyway.

Ancestry's incoming passenger lists are from series BT26 held at TNA Kew. It's easy enough to see what has and hasn't survived by using the TNA catalogue.

In the Word/Phrase box enter Brisbane
In the Year Range boxes enter the year(s).
In the Department/Series box enter BT26.

You'll see there's nothing for 1890, but 18 voyages for 1891. These can be cross-checked with your newspaper reports.

Look like the Bradleys left a year too early!
