Im scrapbooking my family history and have this photo is of my dad and his mum on the left, with other relatives. Dad was born in 1916 but i cant tell from the clothes styles if it was 1930s or immediate post war. I think it is pre war, but not positive! - difficult to tell from ages either - as dad would be 23 in 1939 and his mum 53, i should think it is 1930s.
Please can anyone more or less verify from the clothes styles?
many thanks!

Hi Cavair
I've been looking at your photo but unfortunately I just can't decide, between your two possible dates, when it was taken. I've had my great book out that I've been using to try to teach myself how to date photos, but still can't decide, although I must admit I'm leaning towards a later date rather than the 30s, although I can't quite put my finger on why I feel like that.
I did wonder, though, what made you give those two dates as possibilities? Either before or after the war. Could it have been during the war? Or have I misunderstood what you mean?
I'm sure someone will be along shortly to give you some better ideas than me!

It looks like your Grannie is wearing a Trilby hat and so I have been searching for references to when it was fashionable for women to wear such things.
I came upon the following reference on: hatsuk.com/hatsuk/hatsukhtml/bible/glossary.htm (put www. in front):
The Trilby is a soft felt hat, usually made of fur felt (rabbit) it has a dented crown and flexible brim, the shape originates from the Austrian Tyrol it usually had a small feather trimming.
The hat became most popular between the 1930s-40s when Schiaparelly used it to compliment clothes design. The name comes from the heroine of du Maurier's novel Trilby 1894 in which the heroine of the stage version, wore such a hat.

thanks for your replies....
Yes it could be during the war as well - i guess id made that assumption cos dad was in India and Burma most of the war, but then that wouldnt have been till after 41.
It could therefore be at the beginning of the war. I just cant tell his age in the photo!
He played a lot of golf before the war and id wondered if it was a golf blazer of sorts; but as he also went to stockport grammar school it could be an old boys association jacket. Could it possibly be a school blazer as he would have been 18 in 1934 - but perhaps it could be 1935. Ill have to contact the Old Stopfordians and see if they recognise the blazer.
I know im not going to pinpoint the date exactly, but it seems a wide date range from 1934 - 40s.
Thanks for any continued help!!
