Hi everyone,
I have boxes and boxes of photo's left to me from my grandad and his mother before him. Not sure who this lady is, possibly my great great grandma - can somebody please suggest a date?
Thanks,
Helen

Guess early 1860s. I think that later in the decade the hair started to be swept upwards.
Have you tried Historical Directories to see if you can find the dates for the Photographic Studios?

Click here for the 'Historical Directories' site .
You may find this site also useful. I cannot give you the link as he sells stuff but you will find it helpful to compare photographs.

Hi Helen,
In this case the photographer's studio will be misleading because the photo is a copy of a photo in an earlier format. It was probably originally an ambrotype, on glass, because you can see the scratches, and it is faded. The dark shadow around the head is a sure indication of a copy. The mountboard is probably from the 1890s or later, but the image was taken in the 1860s as Mutley indicated.
Best wishes,
Lenore

Hi Helen
I found The Fashion Museum, The Assembly Rooms, Bath very helpful in dating several photos/paintings for me.
