    Default Leather Bag Maker

    Hi All,
I have found that one particular branch of my tree contained many male ancestors who were leather bag makers between 1860's and 1900's.
I get the gist of what they did, but I'd be interested to understand more about their lifestyles and working conditions, and wondered if anyone knew where I could find such information?

    Best regards
    phil

Where they were involved in the leather industry may be helpful for us to know.

I have a g grandfather who was a portmanteau maker in Pimlico around 1870-1900, as was his father in law...same kind of thing as your fellows I guess. I really know nothing about the trade either, so will also be interested to know more.

You may find something in Old Occupations and Descriptions as well as Londoners' Occupations.

This thread in the Cordwainers section has prompted me to ask if Cordwainers would have made or repaired items other than boots and shoes.
I have come across quite a few in my family searches, some described as journeymen. I don't suppose it would be a big jump for them to make or repair other leather items, bridle-ware, harnesses, belts and the like.
    Cheers
    Dave.

One of my folk was described in a census as a cordwainer/saddle maker.
