Wilfred John Smith also known as William John Smith b 13 Oct 1897 St Georges, Westminster (according to himself)
Cannot find a birth Reg for him under either name.
Parents most likely Alfred & Eliza (as he said his father was a basketmaker from Westbury Wilts)
see 1901: RG13; Piece: 93; Folio: 28; Page: 20. (TNA)
We also are trying to find his Army records - 13th Kings Royal Rifles, enlisted 1815 (under age as did so many)
Can anyone find what I am missing?

Have you found him in the 1911 census to see if that throws up any further clues?

This birth registration looks promising (note misspelling on index transcription):
Name: Wilfrid John Smith
Year: 1897
Quarter: Dec
District: St George Hanover Square
Volume: 1a

This looks as if it could be the family in the 1911 census of Clapham, Wandsworth:
Alfred SMITH Head Mar 39 Basket Maker ? Wiltshire
Eliza do Wife Mar 33 Southwark London
Wilfred John do Son 14 Vauxhall SW
Lily do Daur 12 do do
Benjamin Richard do Son 11 do do
Henry do Son 9 do do
Mary do Daur 5 do do
Beatrice do Daur 2 do do
Alfred & Eliza have been married 15 years and had 8 children, 6 of whom are still living and the family are living at 8 The Polygon, Clapham Common.

Got the certificate (excellent service from GRO but how much could they save if they didnt sent 4 certs in 4 different envelopes?)
Parents were ALBERT Alfred Smith and Elizabeth Dobinson (or Dovinson) Havefound their marriage, so now I guess another cert to get her parents. (have already found his in Trowbridge)

Brilliant, and thank you for letting us know the result. Good luck with the rest of it.
