I must be dim or something but why are the envelopes different colours, do they mean something

Yes, but for some reason know only to IT people, you have to go into subscribed threads or some other obscure place to get the legend.
Blue with things sticking up =Contains unread posts
Blue with envelope closed =Contains no unread posts
Red with things sticking up =Hot thread with unread posts
Red with envelope closed =Hot thread with no unread posts
Padlock =Thread is closed
Little green circle with an arrow =You have posted in this threadET

Thanks for that ET, I'd found the legend but been unable to discern a difference between the two grey envelopes and the two red envelopes. I think I need new specs!

I don't know what's happened here but I can see only two envelope colours. One is the colour of the bands between topics, the other is gray.

I've deliberately kept away from the discussions regarding the new look, mainly to give everyone a chance to sort out problems and get things running smoothly, but now when everyone is talking about red envelopes and other features like "things sticking up" etc., I find myself completely bamboozled. I can see different images within the boxes (like the lock, for example) but almost everything else is a mystery to me.
I have just upgraded my computer and would have thought that the new system would capture all the facets of the new look forum, but seemingly not so.
Yes, I do need new specs, but my vision problems have never before included colour problems.
I feel like a little lost lamb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pam, I am using Internet Explorer so thank goodness that clarifies that my eyes really aren't worse than I absolutely knew they were.
Having been "nurtured" in the military I have learned to look at the worst case scenario as the expected, so I'll look for the IE fix later rather than sooner and anything else will of course be a pleasant surprise (my philosophy of life)!!!!!
The fix will (possibly) mean that in time I'll see something else rather than what looks like a large comma in most envelopes, the alternatives being a lock or a chain link?
Doesn't really worry me if the "pretties" are never apparent on my particular computer, the main thing is that I can still communicate with the lovely people I've met here over the last couple of years and chase and annoy those long gone with gay abandon!
Thank you for your oh so quick response.
Philippa (now reverting to normal sized type as Bo has confirmed her detective skills are sharper than the revered Sherlock's).

I'm basically a lazy creature so the idea of changing browsers is one of those things in the "too hard basket" I'm afraid. But if I have to be completely honest I must say that the idea of changing never actually entered my head.
As a family we try to keep things relatively uniform on the individual computers so that we can be assured of knowing how to find our way around the etherneterry etc wherever we are.
I think that for now I'll bask in my comfortable lazy state and just listen to descriptions of the forum and see them in my imagination!!!!

Hi Philippa I use IE and have very pretty blue and pink envelopes. Have you considered it may be a Canberra problem? Too much hot air on
THE HILL
I just would like to know what makes an envelope qualify for pink...is it when it is a hot subject or when replies are coming thick and fast?
