From Shropshire extracted parish records.


The parish record of the birth of my GGG Grandmother states Elizabeth Stokes daughter of William & Ester Stokes of Hongar(?Hungary) Hill in the parish of Cleobury Mortimer.

Is Hongar or Hungary Hill still there? Or does it no longer exist.

I presume you are looking for Hungry Hill, Cleobury Mortimer. It is about 2 miles east of the town and on the north side of the A4117 road. The map shows a short drive to what looks like a single property there.

If you look on Google Maps at http://maps.google.co.uk/ and search for Cleobury Mortimer you should get a list of local businesses including Booton Bros, Hungary Hill (note spelling variation from OS Map) and the adjacent Motocross Track.

When you don't know the area it's good to get a feel of where your ancestors came from.
I would imagine 200 years ago it would have been all forest.
Maybe they just lived in the forest.
