    Default Grandfather in 1881

My Grandfather Alfred George Henry Russell b.1859 Mile End London was not with his family in 1881.

The only Alfred I've found was on the boys training ship "Arethusa" in Kent age 17.

Alfred would have been about 21/22 then so I don't think it's him.

    He didn't marry until 1886.

Can anyone see him anywhere please.

    Hi June

There's an Alfred George Russell on the 1881 aged 23 born Greenwich, Kent occupation Master of the "Bonnie Lass" in Lincolnshire. Was he a sailor?

Ref is RG11, piece 3277, folio 68 page 8 (please can anyone alter if I'm breaking copyright laws, thanks)

    Best wishes

Thank you for that but I don't think it is him.

He was definitely born in Mile End and he worked in a soap factory for most of his adult life.

    Thanks again

    Dear June

Sorry it's not the right one. Could he have used one of his other names as his christian name? Struggling to find him under the full monty and just Alfred.

    Best wishes

I suppose it's possible although I've not known him to use another name.

    Anything is worth a try.

    Thanks for your help

Have you the reference for the family in 1871?

It helps to get a feeling for him if you can see him in an earlier household.

I think I may have found him under the name Frederick Russell.

He is a lodger working as a barman.

    The ref: RG11/423 p37

    What do you think.

He seems about the nearest June.
Bethnal Green as his birthplace is quite consistant.
I suppose he could have been known as Fred instead of Alf.
