I have recently established contact with a second cousin.
her grandmother and mine were sisters.
She tells me she was told my great aunt, her grandmother, at the age of 17/18 had a baby to a married man in 1911, she has a birth record for this child, she was also told by family members that the child died soon after birth, problem is there is no death record to be found, we are now wondering if this is actually a story told and the baby was actually adopted out, it is nearly 100 yrs ago, how would she go about researching this theory.

A few questions, but no suggestions yet. Someone else may come along....
Was the child born before the 1911 census on 2 April 1911?
Is the father named on the birth certificate?Adele

I've just realized that I've assumed that this child was born in England. Could you give more details on the location please?

Hi members, Checked records it was actually 1912, info I have from birth cert.
Registration District: Nantwich-Sub-District Crewe, County of Chester.
10 Oct 1912-female-May-Father-Henry Alexander Wilcox-Mother Nellie Wilcox-formerly Jackson. 52 Vincent St Monks Coppenhall
Father Furniture salesman and Manager
Nellie was only around 18 at the time of May's birth, the father already had another family.
The parents never married but had another child Kenneth 4th June 1914.
Kenneth was brought up by his nan after Nellie pased away around early 1930s, the father went on to marry another woman in 1921,and had little contact with the family.
We can find no record that fits a death for May, even though her brother was told she died very young.
They stayed in that area so I would espect to find a death registered Nantwich
This is the only part of the puzzle we dont have.Last edited by valg; 05-03-2010 at 12:41 AM. Reason: tex added

If they weren't married, is it possible May used the name Jackson? (poss. depends who registered the death?). There is a May Jackson d. June quarter 1913, age 0, in Cannock, which I think Coppenhall may come under.
