    Default 1901 Census - Question

I've just managed to find someone in the 1901 Census (actual image) and I'm a little puzzled about something.

The census says the address is 106 Victoria Dock Road, no problem with that, the Head of Household is Henry THURLOW, with an occupation of Beer House Manager and his wife as Beer House Assistant and then their six children.

After the children it says: Arthur SALMON Proprietor 26 Beer House Keeper Own Account At Home b. Greenwich, Kent ...... why is he not shown as Head of Household when he owns the property?

DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE, 106 Victoria Dock Road, Canning Town
    Note: Premises never named

    1902 Arthur Henry Grant-Salmon - Beer Retailer ..... Kelly's

I've just told hubby that his Ancestors were a money-grabbing lazy lot!

His Great-Grandfather Fred bought his first Pub in Greenwich, in 1871 aged 21 and actually worked for a living and ran it. Ten years later, he's still working in his second Pub purchase in Poplar, but shoved his Mother into his third Pub purchase to co-manage it with his Brother-in-Law.

By 1891, aged 40, he decided he'd had enough and stayed home with his second wife and kids and all the Pubs have Managers in them. The lazy life didn't suit though, because he popped his clogs in 1900, so his second wife appointed her three Step-Sons as Pub Managers.

It looks like Arthur didn't like the job and sub contracted it!

However, the worst money-grabber was the second wife, she totally ignored Fred's Will (leaving all the Properties and money to her and after her death, to be shared equally between ALL his children).

She left the lot to their two daughters. The married one died first and left her share to her unmarried sister ...... she left the lot to a Horses Home, which is slightly better than a Cat's Home I suppose!

Fred's son had to buy The Graving Dock Tavern from her!

Funny really, as my Father-in-Law knew that all the family money had gone to a Home, (but he didn't know how) - that there had been a rift in the family years ago about it, but nobody knew that Fred had married again to his late wife's sister, and they had two daughters, until I unearthed it!
    Best Wishes,
    Diane
