Here's the next piece of the puzzle:

I know this side of my family have ties to Brierfield, Colne, and County Durham.

There is no obvious death for a William Shutt nor can I find a marriage for a William Shackelton to a Margaret Shutt/Knowles. Have they just moved and changed their surname?

    1851 census
    Census reference: HO107/2386/323/23
William Shackleton, Head. 45, Coal Miner, born Colne
Margaret Shackleton, Wife, 43, born Colne
William Steward, Son in law, 23, Coal Miner, born West Auckland Durham
Elizabeth Steward, Daughter, 21, Coal Miners Wife, born Colne
Thomas Shackleton, Son, 16, Coal Miner, born Colne
Joshua Shackleton, Son, 14, Coal Miner, born Colne
Sarah Shackleton, Daughter, 10, born Colne
Margaret Shackleton, Daughter, 6, born Colne
Jessie Shackleton, Son, 4, born Colne
Margaret Steward, Grand Daughter, 1, born Witton Park Durham
William Steward, Grand Son, 1 month, born West Auckland Durham
Residing at Witton Park, Witton Le Wear, Durham

    Same family?

    Durham website:
    Marriages 1849
STEWARD William to SHOTT Elizabeth - Durham Central

    FreeBMD:
    Marriages Mar 1849
    Steward William - Durham &c.24 62
    Sholt Elizabeth - Durham &c 24 62

SHOTT is very close to Shutt - either way she isn't Elizabeth Shackleton.

Isabella ? Stobart, Daugh, 7, born Whicham Durham

Residing at Witton Park Witton Le Wear Durham

    Duham website:

The question is - is he really William Shutt? and if so why would he change the whole families surname?

    (More to come yet!)

Margaret Shutt (Shackleton?) b.1844 is my 2xg-grandmother. My great-grandmother being her daughter Margaret Ann Butson.

I now think this is Margaret Shutt/Shackleton's first marriage - which is on order so I'll have the details soon. (hopefully the right one)
    Marriages Jun 1867
    BUTSON Thomas - Burnley 8e 263
    Shutt Margaret - Burnley 8e 263

On their daughter Margaret Ann Butson's 1871 BC:
Margaret Ann Butson - born Toft Hill, Evenwood
Father: Thomas Butson (Coal miner) - Mother: Margaret Butson - formerly Shackelton[sic]

Thomas Butson then dies in 1874

And Margaret Shackleton marries a Joseph Orton in 1876 - I have this marriage cert.
    Margaret's details are:
Margaret Butson, 32, Widow, Old Shildon - Father: William Shackleton (deceased), Coal Miner

So it would seem Margaret is using two surnames also - Shutt when in Lancashire - and Shackleton when in Durham

What an interesting mystery. I would look for William Shutt/Shackleton's birth and parents (I don't think you've mentioned it?) If he was illegitimate, he may have gone by two names, his mother's and his father's. Likewise, if he had a step father he may have been known by two names, father and stepfather. And I guess if he was illegitimate AND had a stepfather, he may have been known by three.

I had a quick look though and couldn't find a William Shackleton matching yours in 1841, which helps to suggest it is the same person in both the censuses you quoted. However, it is common for children to change their surnames to their stepfather's, so it would also be plausible for this to be a second marriage with his 1841 record just missing. That was no help whatsoever, I know!

However, if he was known by Shutt AND Shackleton, it would explain why Margaret's third marriage is still under Shutt. As for her maiden name being on the second source for the marriage, perhaps the transcriber took it from her father's surname, which would be on the certificate.

I'm intrigued by the changing occupations. Although it was common to have more than one occupation, it's adds more mystery in this scenario.
