Anyone know what that occupation was?

I have not heard of it,
did you find it in a census, could it be a mistranscription?

Most similar sounding words, bobbin, jobbing, *obbing, *odding, etc
    are 'bb' or 'dd'.

    Hi Mutley,

Yes I found it in a transcription of the 1881 census on FMP

    RG number:RG11 Piece:3344 Folio:61 Page:13

Henry Cain 28 was a Gobin Worker

Hmmm now you put it like that it could be bobbin worker as his father was a Wool Framework Knitter and his sisters were either Tailoresses or lace makers, one of his sisters was a brass bobbin winder.

So it’s probably a mistranslation then.

Terry, looking at the image, I would say that is a good transcription, it does say Gobin Worker, but maybe you are correct with Bobbin given the occupation of his father.

EDIT looking again, it is not bb in the middle and I suspect it ends in r looking at the r on worker.

I am not sure. It is a definite G, looking at the General servant above but Betsy is a Brass Bobin (sic) Winder and that starts with a definite 'B'. He was a coal miner in 1871 so that does not help.

There is a capital 'O' after it, which could have been added as a classification. I'll have to google for the list of classifications and see if that gives a clue.
