NARY/NAREYS of BALLINA

Hello All,

I have at last managed to find my maternal GT Gt Grandparents in the English 1861 census (phew) and using this and later census have the below info and am hoping some one can help me out -but come across a puzzle.

JOHN NARY born 1839 BALLINA

He emmigrates to England and lives his life out in YORK.

In census post 1861 he states he was born Ireland but in 1911 he is living with a BRIDGET SMART where they both state BALLINA is their birth place.(now a widower -possibly his sister?)

So using this info I think I have found them both in the 1851 census - as lodgers aged 12 and 10 living in Liverpool.

There are no mention of parents on this census- they could now be orphans or came across with other family members???
Does anyone have any info of NARYS of BALLINA to give me clue of where to start?

Thank you for taking time to read this - I am in contact with someone who has applied for JOHN NARYS marriage cert but I just wanted to start looking at possbile NARY families over in MAYO.

Can you be more specific please:

In the 1861 Census we have John Narey born abt 1839 in Ireland - Listed as Head age 22.

Class: RG9; Piece: 3225; Folio: 82; Page: 22; (Crown Copyright Reserved).

We also have John Narry also born Ireland abt 1839 - Listed as Son age 22.

Class: RG9; Piece: 3373; Folio: 29; Page: 10; (Crown Copyright Reserved).

Using JOHN NARY (exact match) seems to draw a blank.

In 1861 John Narey is married to Mary Narey - Class: RG9; Piece: 3225; Folio: 82; Page: 22; (Crown Copyright Reserved).

John Narey also appears in 1871 but his wife is now called Ellen, both age 32. (Was Mary a Mary Ellen by any chance?)

In 1881 he is back with with Mary who is now aged Aged 41, but gives his birthplace as Co Sligo: Class: RG11; Piece: 4349; Folio: 9; Page: 13; (Crown Copyright Reserved). This could be right or wrong as it appears that there as Ballina's in Co Mayo, Co Sligo and Co Tipperary.

In 1891 he is now aged 52 and married to Catherine who his 4 years his junior. Interestingly his Daughter Catherine (Aged 11 in the 1881 Census) is no longer living at home; but a Catherine (wife) has appeared who is aged 48.

Bridget NAREY and Arthur SMART appear on the same FreeBMD page, March quarter. 1878, York, Vol 9d, Page 96
The 1881 census, Acomb, Yorkshire, says birthplace of Ireland for Bridget, aged 33. Arthur is a farm labourer. I think she has fiddled with her age as Arthur is only 30.

ok the JOHN NAREY am descended from is this one -sorry

Bryan Lavan (lodger) is my maternal Gt Grandfather -he married eldest daughter of John Narey - a Mary Anne Narey(then aged 16) in June 1881.

I think this the same family in 1871 but not 100 %

RG10; piece 4744; folio 136 page 24 (Crown Copyright Reserved)

but not followed up possible death of patrick as of yet.


But it was finding the marriage of JOHN NARY to ELLEN(Elen) CARALINE 1860 q3 York gave me to question name spelling therefore tracked them down in 1861 to here

1851 possible match for John here in Liverpool-( and this is where I think I have tied it up with him living with Bridget Smart in 1911 both saying they were from Ballina)

And that is where I up to at this time - I can't find him in 1841 although plenty of Nareys in Yorks around that time - It makes me wonder if he came over with his sister post 1841 census (hence lodging in Liverpool 1851) maybe after parents died to join family already in York later-

A friend of mine has transcribed the registers for Ballina, Co Mayo at this location http://www.irishhereandthere I found these Narys in her records.
1854 June 15 - Margaret for Robert Nary and Anne Manley, Brook St.; sp. John Forde and Margaret Monnelly see note at bottom

1833 November 1 - John for Michael Gallagher and Margaret Nary, Ardnaree; sp. John Gallagher and Mary Nary (Neary)
and this one in another source.

I am interested in Munnellys or Manleys from Ballina. There is a likely a connection between myself and Anne Munnelly above. It is possible that Anne is the same child baptized here -
1828 July 13 - Ann for Anthony Munnelly and Mary Munnelly, Hill St., Ballina; sp. Dominick Geraghty and Bridget Harrison.
Does any of this match up with what you have found? My group moved to Stamford, Lincolnshire in 1846-48 where they altered the last name to Manley. Later grandfather moved to the US in 1899. I have found that many Ballina people moved to West Yorkshire - Bradford, Leeds, Bolton and so on. Paul Manley Alameda, CA

Thank you for your post - the web site is really good - thank you for the link.

It may be worth me looking back at the 1851 census and see if any of the names you mention turn up around abouts the same place in Liverpool as my siblings JOHN & BRIDGET NAR(E)Y.

There is migration of Irish not just to West Yorkshire but over to North Yorkshire as in my case the City of York. Lots of the Irish lived in a part of the ciry called BEDDERN - try googling it along with BEDDERN HALL- may be worth you checking census out for this area to see if any of your family turn up here.
