    Default Caroline Elizabeth Bound

I am having trouble finding my great Grandmother Caroline Elizabeth Bound. My Grandfather's birth certificate gives her Maiden name as Bound, but she was illiterate so maybe not be spelled correctly. The 1901 and 1911 censuses indicates she was born in Mitcham, Surrey in 1863 and Married Samuel Everett in 1893. and shows them living in Lever Street, Farringdon, London.

I can't find any record of her birth or life before the birth of Charles Samuel in 1900. I also cannot find any record of their marriage.

Any help with this brick wall is greatly appreciated.

Found this one in the 1891 census:

    Back Cottage, North St, Wimbledon

William BOUND, 36 general labourer b Beaulieu, nr Southampton
Caroline BOUND, 25 laundress b Gloucester, Bristol (sic)
William BOUND, 7 scholar b Wimbledon
    Caroline BOUND, 5 ditto
    John BOUND, 2 b Wimbledon
    Henry BOUND, 1 b Wimbledon

    Ref: RG12/607/87/57

The birthdate for mother is 2 years out (not unusual) and she states she was born in Bristol but Wimbledon is not far from Mitcham. Perhaps William died or she went off with Samuel at some point. I'll have a look for more Carolines.

PS Forget the above. I've just found the same family in 1901!

    Hello,

On Freebmd, I've just found Caroline Elizabeth Bond, born in East Grinstead in the September quarter of 1863, vol 2b, page 114.

Sorry I don't know whether Mitcham and East Grinstead are close, geographically!

Unfortunately not, I live in Sussex and East Grinstead has got to be around 30 miles from Mitcham. Appreciate your efforts though.

There are two baptisms to a Samuel and Caroline Elizabeth Everett at Saint Clement, City Road. The address was 161 Lever Street.
Ellen in 3 Oct 1899 (was that Flora?) and Charles Samuel 2 Aug 1905.

In both cases it clearly states Caroline Elizabeth but I am struggling to find her under anything like Bound. I'll keep digging.....

Someone who might be worth considering?

1891 census (record held by TNA, crown copyright)
    RG12; Piece: 234; Folio 95; Page 57
    1 Lambs Buildings, St Luke's
William BOWN Head Wid 60 General Labourer Glos Chalford
Caroline BOWN Daur S 32 General Domestic Servant Surrey Mitcham

This is in the same census piece and same enumeration district as Samuel EVERETT living at home with his parents (only 4 folios away)

RG12; Piece: 234; Folio 91; Page 50 (reference to record held by TNA, crown copyright)
    1 F Block, Errol Street, St Luke's

It seems she had a middle name Elizabeth.

    Births
    Sep Qtr 1858
    Bown Caroline Elizabeth
    Croydon 2a 160

All circumstantial, of course. But there aren't that many people born in Mitcham and living in St Luke's.

Given the difficulty, you might want to consider ordering a birth certificate for one of your grandfather's siblings, to see another example of Caroline's former name?

Well done Kerrywood, that is the best I have seen.

This could be the birth of Ellen registered in Dec 1899 at Holborn. 1b/693

You have to go all the way back to 1861 in order to find them in Mitcham.

(references to records held by TNA, crown copyright)
    1881 - RG11; Piece: 368; Folio: 61; Page: 11 (enumerated as BOWEN, but same address as 1891)
    1871 - RG10; Piece: 411; Folio: 30; Page: 29 (Ancestry has BOWNS)
1861 - RG9; Piece: 452; Folio: 48; Page: 24 (Ancestry has BOWNA, but it could be BOWND)

Thanks for the replies, particularly Kerrywood. It gives me something to work on after beating my head against this brick wall! I have ordered both the birth certificates you mentioned as they look promising. Would like to find the marriage too, but maybe thats a step too far.

Thanks again, its very very much appreciated.

    Default EVERETT

Ellen EVERETT appears on the Register of Deaths in Holborn as follows:

3rd October 1899 161 Lever Street Ellen EVERETT, female, 1 month, father Samuel EVERETT, Bootmaker (Journeyman)

Could the Flora EVERETT shown in the 1901 census perhaps be Caroline's child prior to the marriage or maybe her stepdaughter from a previous marriage of Samuel. Will investigate further.
