Default Tin Mines in Cornwall in the 1800's

Many of my Ancestors and their rellies were tin miners as per the 1841 census records. Obviously they'd been involved in the field prior to census records.

Where do I start to research - Location of Mines, Mine Owners, Employee Lists etc? .

Please note that I am in Canada so access to such records that are viewable [at libraries and record offices in Cornwall ]I cannot get to.

Any support or information on this topic is much appreciated.

Take a peek at this Colin. It should answer every question you can think of. This is the paperback version.

Many folks were involved in mining Cornwall was riddled with tin mines - and copper mines and arsenic mines and silver mines and iron mines and....

    Pams advice is good

I have details of the mines in St Enoder for example, but I suspect you will be looking at the Penwith area?
There are various places you can contact - the Cornish Studies Libarary for example may be able to assist, but you may struggle because of the sheer numbers of mines.

I think you may be trying to take on too much at once here Colin. General reading around the subject may be a good start - e.g those items mentioned by Pam.
If you have specific mines in your agenda, then perhaps there may be more advice we can offer - but, as I said earlier, mining was one of the Cornish ways of life in the 19th century. Each parish had many mines and it would be impossible to give details for each of them.

Your advice is very sound - as always.

I'm ordering the book and will put together names and dates for posting to this thread. Will it help others in assisting me?

    Quite possibly Colin

The thing with mines is that you may be looking for details on a small mine which has very little detail available on it specifically.
The ones in my parish have been researched because one of the archaeologists for Cornwall Council lives here too I was fortune enough to get hold of some of his papers and thus can supply some details. Other parishes may not be so fortunate.

But let us see what you have - perhaps we can sort something

Book has been ordered and hopefully here in a week or so. I currently have the following families as miners:
    Ball from Gwithian and Phillack
    Mollard from Germoe.

I am in the process of finding more mining families.

In the meantime, info. on mines in the above areas, if available, would be appreciated
