Can anyone tell me anything about the evacuation of elderly people from the Southwark area to Cornwall during WW2?
My great grandparents Charles and Rose Hannah Woodcock were evacuated to the Fowey/St Austell area (don't know when) and died there in 1941 and 1942. Charles died in 1941 in Sedgecome Priory (which I believe was a workhouse) and Rose died in the Cornwall Mental Hospital at Bodmin.
I just think that it was terribly sad that there were moved so far away from their family in Southwark.

Hello Lyn - welcome to Brit-Gen,
As a starting point, have a read of paragraph 4 of this TNA Research Guide.
The Southwark Local History department may also be able to help.
Good luck!

Sedgecome Priory had been a workhouse. In 1930 it was re-designated a Public Assistance Institution. After 1948 it became Sedgemoor Priory Hospital providing care for geriatric patients until 1969.
The Cornwall Mental Hospital at Bodmin also housed an Emergency Hospital during the war which dealt with both military and civilian casualties.

And sadly, the original poster hasn't visited the forum for four of them.
On the other hand, all information gratefully received as it may help someone in the future.
Cornwall Phil - a warm welcome to British-Genealogy.
And thank you for the information you have added to another thread too.
Hopefully at some point you'll have a query we can help you with.

Hi Sandyhall,
Welcome back.
Not 'taken over' as such, but Brit-Gen is now sponsored by Forces War Records.
Apart from the fact that this has led to us receiving more military-based questions, I don't think there are too many changes. Still the same very helpful people (some old-timers, some newer-timers ) to sort out your queries.
