Smile John Phillips - Fresh Eyes Needed

    Hello!

I would love to have some fresh eyes look over what I know so far and help fill in some gaps while I wait for a certificate to arrive.

JOHN PHILLIPS (my great-great-grandfather) married HANNAH REYNOLDS - Dec. Quarter 1867 - Neath

1871 CENSUS - Giants Grave, Briton Ferry
    JOHN PHILLIPS - 24yrs - b.1847, Briton Ferry - Ag. Labourer
w/ wife HANNAH PHILLIPS, children Richard Lean/Lewis and Anne Phillips.

1881 CENSUS - Giants Grave, Briton Ferry
    JOHN PHILLIPS - 34yrs - b.1847, Briton Ferry - Ag. Labourer
w/ wife HANNAH PHILLIPS, children Richard, Lewis John, Mary E. and Evan George Phillips.

1891 CENSUS - Dock Cottage, Briton Ferry
    JOHN PHILLIPS - 46yrs - b.1845, Giants Grave - Gen. Labourer
w/ wife HANNAH PHILLIPS, children Richard, Lewis J., Mary E., Evan G., Annie, Thomas, Hannah J., William and Margaret Phillips.

1901 CENSUS - Church Street, Briton Ferry
    JOHN PHILLIPS - 57yrs - b.1844, Briton Ferry - Gen. Labourer
w/ wife HANNAH PHILLIPS, children Lewis J., Mary E., Evan G., Thomas E., William D., Robert and Maggie W. Phillips.

This is where the fun starts.

I have no idea who JOHN PHILLIPS' parents are or when he was born as I'm not able to narrow it down. I have trawled parish records for a baptism or christening and found nothing. I can't even find evidence of the marriage in the parish records but it's there on FreeBMD. I've search the 1861 and 1851 census and unable to narrow it. I can't track them down in the 1911 census. AND I don't know when he dies.

I HAVE ordered the marriage cert., but while I wait with baited breath, can anyone see some link that I've missed??

    Thank you!

I searched the 1851 Census for "John Phillips born in Wales 1846 +/- 2 years and this is the only hit I got:
    HO107/1559/552 Page 15
4, New Cottage Row, Saint John, Southwark, Surrey
William PHILLIPS aged 40, a Carpenter born Wales
Rebecca PHILLIPS aged 45, born Wales
Evan PHILLIPS aged 13, an Errand Boy born Wales
John PHILLIPS aged 7, born Wales
Mary PHILLIPS aged 5, born Wales
William PHILLIPS aged 1, born Bermonsey, Surrey

I've tried looking for them in 1861 (especially Rebecca) but no joy yet

Until the marriage certificate arrives, I doubt much can be done with any certainty. The certificate should give the fathers name and occupation - which will hopefully allow him to be tracked down.
I suspect John Phillips in Wales is going to be pretty common - so hanging on until you have at least a couple of extra clues in the form of the marriage certificate is sensible.
