Private Maurice Nash in the Crimean War

I am trying to pinpoint my great great grandfather's service in the British Army. According to his discharge papers Private Maurice Nash #3254 enlisted in Limerick 06 Feb 1852, and bought his discharge May 1863. He left with 2 Good Conduct Medals, a Sebastopol Clasp, and the Crimean Medal. It is signed by R. Buddy Colonel Lt. Colonel, Commanding Officer 1st Battallion, Regiment of Foot, Horse Guards. It is dated 03 Jun 1865 at Aldershot. Thanks

Does the discharge document state in which regiment he served?

Various campaign records exist and are held by The National Archives (TNA) at Kew, London; the records are described in this research guide.

Regimental museums may be able to help with details of units and their participation in events such as the Crimea War. Use a search engine to look for the 'Naval and Military Press' - they may have a published history of the regiment.

TNA has lots of information on its web-site, including this brief history of The Crimean War - the BBC web-site has this on the war. If you use a search engine, you should be able to locate other sites of interest, such as The Crimean War Research Society.

"1st Battallion, xx Regiment of Foot"
There should be a number in there to tell us which regiment.

As it is, Lt-Colonel Ralph Budd appears to have been 14th Regt and therefore presumably CO of the 1st Battalion.

The 14th were in Ireland 1850-54, Malta 1854-55, Crimea 1855-56, Malta again 1856-58, Ionian Islands 1858-60, West Indies 1860-64, then England 1864-66

And 3254 Pte Maurice Nash is also confirmed in the 14th Regt according to the Crimea roll. So that gives you the regiment to research.

Since it is now established that Nash served in the 14th Foot, this may be of interest. 14th (Buckinghamshire) Regiment, left Malta on the 28th August 1858, aboard HMS Perseverance - 23 Officers, 43 Sergeants, 21 Drummers, 717 Men, 57 Women, 112 Children, to Ionian Islands
