It would appear that rootsmagic has created and launched a free edition of their software called "Rootsmagic Essentials"
Oddly however there is no UK free edition, though that's not exactly a major problem.

Does this "free edition" lock up after 30 days so you have to purchase the full edition in order to carry on?
Sadly, our friend Vanessa, passed away 29th. February 2012.

Nope, looks pretty well featured by the looks of it, just without all the trimmings (which after 2 years of research I don't really touch anyway) so as stickymone says, it looks to be perfect for those doing research for for first time.
I won't post a link to the site, but there is a compare list.

Think of something else for Xmas, this is a pukka free download with no time limit.I've looked all around the download and comparison pages and there is no mention of a 30 day trial.

I email Bruce, the guy who writes it, for everyone last night. He says there is no time limit.
IMHO this makes this the perfect free tool for everyone doing family research. It's not too complicated either, which I found was the problem with some of the other free downloads around during my testing last year.

Sorry I haven't posted for a long while -- other things taken precedence -- but I have been lurking.
The free download of Roots Magic is not time limited so far as I know -- I've had it installed for about 6 months and been playing around with it. I've been using Brother's Keeper for 15 years and I know it inside out, so there is nothing in RM which would tempt me to migrate permanently.
That said, the one feature in RM which others don't have is the ability to install the software onto a USB memory stick. Ideal for taking out and about and referring to the data from a different computer that doesn't have RM installed. I've imported my data into RM via a gedcom file out of BK and have it installed on a 32gb USB flash drive.
