I have been trying to compile a family tree at my grandmother’s request before she passes. I can find a great x 2 grandmother as far back as 1838, but can’t find any records previous to this on the IGI or any other genealogical sites I have researched. I am not able to visit the records office in person as I now live in the USA. If you could please refer me to any information I would be very grateful.
What I do know:
Elizabeth Hempsill born 27 December 1838 in Lancaster, England.
There is a family story that Elizabeth was from a quite influential family..Perhaps with ties to Royalty….but was dis-owned when she chose a man to be a husband that was not approved of by her family. She married and Edwin Bowskill in 1856. I would very much like to find a birth certificate or christening record for Elizabeth, or any evidence who her parents might be…and if there is any truth to the family story that has been passed down.
Thank you so much for any assistance you might be able to offer me with this special request.
Jessica

Jessica, as you know that Elizabeth married Edwin Bowskill in 1856, do you have the marriage certificate? This would give her father's name and occupation as it is after 1837.

Something is amiss here as ancestry nor FMP show any Elizabeth Hemsill
or Edwin Bowskill. Tried Hempsill, Hemsell, Ed* etc - zilch.
Also nothing on FreeBMD for any combination of names.
Surely it must be me?

hi
There are a number of Bowskills in and around Lancaster, tho no Edwins that I can see. Do you have details of Edwin and Elizabeth's children which might help us locate the parents?

There`s only ONE Hempsill on record for Births / Marriages / Deaths on freebmd and that is
Betsy Ann Hempsill b Dec 1859 in Boston 7a 56 .....this is 3 years after the supposed Marriage of Elizabeth Hempsill to Edwin Bowskill....just a thought..but maybe Betsy Ann is Elizabeths child and they weren`t married then...I will look up for any Bowskill births in Boston (Lincolnshire).....allan
ADDED...NO births for Bowskill in Boston so squash that idea....worth a try ....still intrigued about Elizabeth Hempsill and Betsy Hempsill...too much of a coincidence.

As none of us can find any evidence of the existence of either Elizabeth HEMPSILL or Edwin BOWSKILL, can I suggest a drastic step? Start again from your grandmother's own parents' marriage & re-do your grandmother's family tree. There are all sorts of records now online that were not available in your great-grandmother's day, particularly the BMD registrations from 1837 & the censuses 1841 - 1911. Family stories may be completely accurate, or may have a grain of truth in them, or they may be complete fiction. I'd put the handwritten tree to one side for now & see what can be found.
I'm sure if you post the details (not of living people) that you have evidence for (eg from BMD certificates) you will be amazed at how much help BG members will give!
