    Default 1841 help please

Can someone please help me to find a family in 1841, probably in Yorkshire ?

In 1851 I have Harriott France, a widow aged 49, born YKS Attercliffe and living YKS Greasboro. With her she has a daughter, Elizabeth, aged 18 a son, Thomas, aged 13 and another daughter, Mary, aged 9. Unless she was a very naughty lady, she would be married c1832 if Elizabeth was the first child and her husband would die sometime after 1842 so she should be with him in 1841 - somewhere !! Yes, I know I could send for a Marriage Certificate of one of the children - Mary married Joseph Gough and Elizabeth married Richard Page but that is the easy way and I am a seeker and don't like to be beat!!!

I have found a burial in the Rotherham area in 1843 of a Henry Martin France which could fit as Greasboro was in that area, but no sign of any member of this family in 1841. Neither Hugh Wallis nor the IGI has yielded any sign of a marriage and I have exhausted all the possibilities I can think of on A******y.

    Thank you ............... Eileen

    Hi Eileen,
Following on from what pattenwalsh has found in 1841 which looks very hopeful indeed. This will come under the Rotherham reg district and there are two Peter France deaths recorded, one in 1846 and one in 1847. There is also a Peter Frane reg dead in 1849.

Be careful with the FRANCE family, they are a VERY confusing family. I've just checked my tree, and my cousins, but cannot find this branch on there, even though I know they are connected somewhere.
Have you tried checking out the Penistone area? Those from the Rotherham area originated there.

Thank you, kind people - this is almost certainly the right family and Peter is the missing husband. It confirms also that there was an older child so now I can have a further search for a marriage. Pre 1837 though, another trip to the Archives.

For the time being we have abandoned my neighbours' research and I am now delving into my brother in law's mother's family - GOUGH. It was a Joseph Gough who married Mary France in Sheffield in 1859, but was born in the delightfully named village of Marsh Gibbon in BKM. Family History certainly improves one's geography; I only knew that BKM was 'somewhere down south', now I know from my road atlas that iMarsh Gibbon is to the north east of Oxford. This lot of research was only started last Friday so I have not yet deep into the France family. Thank you, Nicolina, for warning me about Penistone.

As for France with an 's' on the end, I was supposed to have looked at Frances, Francis, Franks, Franse as variations, but it was about this time in the morning (1.30 a.m.) so perhaps I was not at my best and obviously mised it.

don't forget ffrance. They don't normally appear as Frances - my grand-father was always adamant that his name was "France like the country, not Frances".If I can help with the family just ask. Maybe one day I shall fill in all the missing ones from my tree.
