    Default Carman - Contractor?

Is it much of a leap to see a Carman in 1871 cenus show up as a Contractor on future census or birth/marriage cerificates?

I'm finding several of these instances

    Thanks

Not if he had his own vehicle - whatever that might have been - and could have contracted his services out.

From the censuses, what does it say as to his employment status? Employed? Employer? Own account?

Carting contractor was a recognised occupation.

"Carting contractor; master carman; enters into contracts for supply of carts, horses ...men etc for cartage purposes".
