You can download Coastguard records from 1816 onwards via TNA for free using Digital microfilm

Scroll down and read what is available.

Use this link to downlaod selected files (which are very large, you'll need a good broadband connection).

    Hello Liz,

If you look at the Coastguards site on Genuki.org.uk (you can do a google search as well to find it) there is some information regarding John and his family. Looks as if he was born in 1809 in Portsmouth, Hants. It also gives information regarding his wife Louisa and dates and names of some of the children. They certainly seem to have stayed in the Whitstable/Seasalter area in Kent, as they are also there in 1881.

If you need help to find this info, let me know.

    Glenys

PS. I guess I was slow off the mark!

    Delilah

John Colley was nominated to the Coast Guard Service in 1831 (Nomination No.3001). He joined in Portsea, with his first posting being to Blackrock CG Station on 3 Oct 1831. He did not remain there long, because on the 13 Oct he was transferred to Greenway CGS, where he remained until 2 Dec 1837, when he was promoted to Commissioned Boatman (equivalent to a Junior Petty Officer in the Navy) and transferred to Beaulieu River CGS.

Using the files in ADM 175 (as mentioned above) you will be able to continue to trace his movements. If you have any problems please let me know, I'm more than happy to try and help.

    Regards

    Martin

I have found a James Pout, Master Mariner with a wife Louisa living at 7 Bexley Terrace, Whitstable on the 1881 Census. She gave her place of birth as Swailcliffe which suggest that this is the right family.

Children, all born in Whitstable, all unmarried:

    Louisa 22
    Elvina 20
    Annie 15
    Sally 13
    Ada 12
    Emily 8
