Probably way before the period you want but may be interesting all the same, google for
libraryireland.com has the 1862 street directory with some residents and business names.

The directory is called Thom's Dublin Street Directory. There may be other years on line also.

Looking at my current Dublin Street Directory, James Street forms the southern boundary of the Guinness Brewery (aka St James's Gate Brewery).
Arthur Guinness signed a 9000 year lease on the (then) disused brewery in 1759, so I suspect James Street has a long history.

Also in close proximity can be found St Patricks Hospital and St James Hospital, as well as Heuston railway station.

However, there is also a James Street East and a James Street North, but both of these are small streets, unlikely to go to 131 houses.

Hi Ruth, I haven't got access to a Street Directory, sorry, but am very interested in 161 St James St. My father (94) had just remembered the address, so I Googled for starters and saw your post. He was born there in 1917 and lived there until 1929 (he thinks). He says they lived upstairs and two other families lived downstairs. I'd be interested in any leads as I have just begun my search and would be happy to give you any info that could assist you.
