My Gt grandfather was born George Stedman (or Steadman) 29/6/1863 in Worth Sussex.
He was the youngest child of James Stedman & Betsy Holman.
His parents died within months of one another when he was about 2 years old, leaving him and his siblings to grow up in Cuckfield Union Workhouse.
He can be found in 1871 on RG10/1062/14/4
In 1881 he was a servant to James Field in Cuckfield. RG11/1062/99/5.
In 1898 he married my gt grandmother Florence Pearson in Hastings.
They are found in 1901 RG13/783/72/35
In 1902, she died leaving my grandmother & a sister to be split up.
Two questions.
1. I cannot find him in 1891. Folklore has it that he joined the forces. Which one I do not know....but folklore also says that he was bitten by a monkey!!
Can anyone find him for me??
2. In 1911 he is living with his sister in law and my grandmother mistranscribed as Stadman!
I have yet to find my grandmother's sister Mabel Stedman in 1911, who was born in 1900. I believe she was living somewhere in Sussex with in laws. Where was she?
Any help gratefully received.
Sue

Just looked at the original for you crossed out on the sheet are George Marden son 33, Edward Arthur Marden son 31, Rebecca Mary Marden daughter 29. John & Mary had 4 children, they have written 'Stedman Mable girl adopted' - the enumerator has filled in adopted daughter in the correct column.
Their address was - Gulledge Cottage, Felbridge, East Grinstead.
Hope this is your Mabel

I was trying to make John Marden's wife a Holman, but haven't succeeded so far.
In 1881 John (24), Mary(23), George (3), and Edwin A (1) are indexed as Murdin. RG11/1057 folio 88 page 26, Imberhorne Buildings, East Grinstead
John and Mary were at Gulledge Cottage in 1901. RG13/904 folio 70 page 36

I cannot find George 1891 either - strangely I cannot find the Mardens in 1891 either (they are at Gulledge Farm in 1901).
Sorry the Mable spelling is mine not the Mardens - they could spell it properly!!!

That is definitely Mabel (Mable). But I have no idea who this family is. They ring no bells at all. Will have to have a look now.
Thanks

Marriages Sep 1877
Marden John Henry E. Grinstead 2b 197
Stone Mary E.Grinstead 2b 197
Tester Mary Ann E. Grinstead 2b 197
Williams George E. Grinstead 2b 197
So Mary is either Mary Stone or Mary Tester. That helps not one bit!!!
Sue

Just looked at 1901 census and as the Stone family live in the same vicinity, I assume Mary was Mary StoneLast edited by sue2white; 01-11-2009 at 04:54 PM. Reason: PS

Just a thought - could the Mardens be related to any of George's siblings (he was the youngest?)

A-hah!
George's eldest brother John born 1851 married Hannah Marden 11.4.1874. They are living next door to John Marden in 1881. So John Marden was George's sister in law's brother, by the looks of it! Phew!
Thanks everybody for that.
Where was George in 1891 though....getting bitten by a monkey???

Not necessarily the Mardens (though I am still thinking that there must be
), but I think there may be a connection to Walter Sturmer with whom George and Kate are boarding in 1911.
According to the 1911 census, Elizabeth, Walter's wife, was born in Brede.
According to the 1901 census, Florence, George's wife, was born in Brede.
Florence's maiden name was Pearson.
I believe that Walter and Elizabeth were married in September quarter 1901 Tunbridge registration district. Only one Elizabeth as a bride on the page surname Pearson.
(There is another Walter Sturmer marrying December quarter 1900 Wandsworth district. He married Elizabeth Mary Clements 23 Dec 1900 at Saint Mary, Battersea. Safely accounted for on the 1911, with his wife listed as Elizabeth Mary, ages match marriage certificate, married 10 years, and living in Earlsfield, Wandsworth district.)
