I am looking for any information on JOHN NORTON born 1838 at Nettleham Lincolnshire, son of THOMAS NORTON. The 1861 census shows him as a Private, Second Battalion 17th Regiment Foot at Camp Shorncliffe Cheriton Kent UK.

The introduce yourself forum (where this thread was placed) is just to say Hello.
Hello howard 44
As it is a question I have moved it to Lincolnshire, should you want it moved elsewhere, please ask.
Good Luck with the enquiry

Hi Howard,
Welcome to the forum.
Can you be a little more precise on the 'any information', please? e.g. you say you've found John on the 1861 census, and you also give his parents.
Does this mean that, for instance, you have his birth certificate and that you've found him on census later than 1861. Or that you can't find a birth registration and, what's worse, have lost him completely after the 1861 census?
It just saves us looking for information you already have. Which wastes our time, and adds nothing to what you already know.

Hi pam. Sorry about putting first post in wrong place. I was able to find John listed in the 1841 and 1851 census living with his parents in Nettleham Lincolnshire. I do not have his birth certificate. I was at the Lincoln Archives 3 years ago and was able to find references to the complete family. Last week I found the reference to John on the 1861 census. I am interested in his military record to see if he was in Canada in the 1860's with his regiment. at the time of the Fenien Rebellion. Also did he return to england or did he settle in canada. So far I have not found any information after 1861 census.

Though it is a little old, you may find this thread worth reading.

Wow, Mutley and Geoff
I can't really follow that.
Howard, Do I presume from this that you have all the details you want regarding John's parents and siblings, or are you still missing things such as the marriage of John's parents, their burials, etc?I was at the Lincoln Archives 3 years ago and was able to find references to the complete family.

I visited the Lincoln Archives and went through Parish records and Census for 1841 t0 1891. I was able to find the entries of each of the childrens births. Just to complicate things there was another THOMAS NORTON in Nettleham at that time. Also his wife had a name that sounded like my great great grandmother's but was spelled differently and they had 2 sons with same name but born different years .
I traced one of the sons of my ancestor,ERNEST WILLIAM to Hudderfield Yorkshire. I was able to find out when he died. There were no children so dead end.
I am also working on another son GEORGE who lived in Swineshead for many years. Have contacted Boston Library for further details such as if any children, obituary, death notice and marriage notice.
I have traced a daughter ANNIE ELIZABETH. She never married and is buried in graveyard at All Saints Church in Nettleham as are her father and mother.
Other children SARAH born 1835, THOMAS born 1843, CHARLES born 1845, MARY 1847 and my Great grandfather Arthur James born9 jan 1854.

Hi again Howard,
You didn't say if you had Thomas and Mary Ann's marriage. Based on Mary Ann's birth place of South Kelsey in the 1851 census this may well be the marriage as Thornton le Moor is the next village to South Kelsey.
From the Lincolnshire FHS marriage index for Westwold deanery -
Thomas Norton and Mary Ann Cresey 17 February 1834 as Thornton le Moor.
The IGI has a baptism for a Mary Ann Cressy 17 January 1814 at South Kelsey. Parents John Cressy and Elizabeth. Record extracted from Bishop's Transcripts.
From the same marriage index this might be John and Elizabeth -
John Cressy and Elizabeth Dixon 7 February 1814 South Kelsey.
I think this is the marriage of George. June quarter 1870 Boston registration district. (FreeBMD) I think he married Jane Morton, but I can only find a Jane Norton on the earlier census so there's a bit of a query there.
On the 1911 census George says that he has been married 38 years, and has had one child who died.
RG14PN19565 RG78PN1174 RD415 SD1 ED19 SN99
George Norton, head, 60, mar, retired farmer, Nettleham Lincs
Jane, wife, mar, 61, Halton Fenside Lincs
Address Stump Cross, Swineshead, and George made his mark.
Based on the fact that George and Jane seemed to have lived in Boston registration district the only likely child I can see for them is a 'Male' Norton with no birth registration, just a death registration in June quarter 1872. No unnamed Norton buried in Lincolnshire in 1872, unless buried in a non-conformist burial ground.
Boston Library do not hold any parish registers. They do hold newspapers but they need a fairly approximate date of BMD before they can do a search.
