Hi All
My sister-in-law has hit a brick wall. One of her ancestors got off the boat in the USA and vanished. Family memory has that he wanted to return home and be buried in the family plot. Does anyone know of any forums over there that she could post on.

I don't, but there are many places out there she/you can look. Most states and major cities have some kind of genealogy or public records website, but it really does help to know where the ancestor went!

Depending on what years the person immigrated you can start by checking Ellis Island or Castlegardens. Have you looked on passenger lists leaving UK?
Why don't you post the details and someone will have a look - the more information there is, the more help. Most passenger/immigration lists go up to 1950 ish but depend on what site you use and the country. If the person immigrated later then you will have a difficult time. You could check genesreunited to see if anyone else is researching that person and all the US states have genealogy sites.Sadly, our friend Vanessa, passed away 29th. February 2012.

Try rootsweb
Have you tried the rootsweb message boards. They are fairly helpful on there.
Worth a try as the more times it is out there the better chance of a hit.

First port of call, of course, should be the B-G USA Forum. You'd be amazed at how many people find things on B-G via search engines! Not to mention, of course, all the helpful American sleuths we already have on board

US forums
genforum, if you google it, it's part of genealogy.com has free boards, as does ancestry.com (since rootsweb was bought by them). You may have to register for free.
Posting can be done by surname or by location.
also
http://www.usgenweb.org
has state, then county sites for each location. Most have a board associated with them, but some of the archived data is missing on the links since a change in server location occurred about a year ago. Some of the webmasters aren't keeping thier pages up. It's a free organization.
If you know the state where someone lived you can also do a search on findagrave.com
It helps if you know the county.
Hope this helps
