Default Nehemiah Smith - The Mystery Man

    Hi

I have a Nehemiah Smith who married Sarah Hackett in Frome @1823. He was an Engine Driver and on each census from 1851/1881 he claimed to have been born in a different parish.

    Midsomer Norton#
    Chewton Mendip
    Timsbury
    Farmborough

He appears to have been born @1799, but searches on online Parish Transcriptions have not uncovered his baptism. His son also c alled N ehemiah went on to become a well respected Methodist Minister.

    Many Thanks

    David

    Hello David,

    Welcome to the B-G forum.

I had a look at the Census records and remember a similar ancestor I was searching. Someone once explained to me that depending on the Census informant, the birthplace might be a guess or just plain wrong. Agree with Peter, search for the record.

    Good luck hunting!

    Default Nehemiah Smith

    Hi
I too have come up against the same brickwall. We know the Smiths were non-conformists but I haven't found Nehemiah in any of the records that appear to be available. One of his descendants (my grandfather) was a Unitarian and there were Unitarian chapels in Somerset and further north into the Midlans, But again I cannot trace any records. (Nehemiah was my 3x great-grandfather.) What is your connection?

    Hi David,
I'm sorry I cant help with your query on Nehemiah SMITH but I would like to ask if you have any info on Sarah HACKETT. My 3 x great grandmother was Maria HACKETT of Frome a daughter to James & Elizabeth HACKETT nee MASTERS. Maria was baptised in 1810 but was probably born a few years prior to then.
Any chance these two girls are sisters.?

    Cheers
    Geoff

Hi Geoff - unfortunately, David has not visited the forum for nearly 2 years and so may miss seeing your message. However, if you click on his user-name, a drop-down box appears and one of the options is to send him an email.

Default Nehemiah Smith and Sarah Hackett

    Hi Geoff

Nehemiah Smith married Sarah Hackett in Frome in 1824. The following is what I have found out so far about Sarah Hackett - but there is a puzzle about who her parents actually were, as you will see from the following:

The Hacketts go way back in Frome
Robert Hacket m Ann Spencer 13 Aug 1722 St Johns, Frome
    Mary bap 09 May 1731
Joseph Hacket[t] was baptised in St Johns, Frome on 18.03.1767, bastard son of Mary Hacket.

Joseph m. Sarah Street 26.12.1789 in Frome
    Joseph bap 27.01.1792
Sarah b 18.05.1798, bap 28th May, 1798 in Rook Lane, Independent Meeting, Frome in 1798.
(I took the baptism date from the microfilm at PRO. In BMD Registers the date of birth, from the same source, is given as 18th May 1790. Having looked at the original image this is clearly a transcription error for 1798 (ie she was baptised 10 days after her birth). bmd have been notified.

    Place Frome
    Church St John the Baptist
    Burial Date 19 Aug 1794
    Forename Joseph
    Relationship son of
    Joseph HACKETT

    Place Frome
    Church Workhouse Death Register
    Burial Date 20 Dec 1837
    Forename Joseph
    Surname HACKETT
    Age 75
Notes Died 14 Dec1837; Old age; buried Christ Church Frome by Frome Union

However on the record of Charlotte Smith’s baptism in 1832 it notes that Sarah’s parents were Robert and Mary HACKETT!!!!
Frome St John the Baptist 19 Jun 1786
    Robert HACKETT m Mary HYMAN
They had several children baptised at St John, Frome but not Sarah.

Hope this is of some help

    Brian
