Hi
I have just come across a reference to a "Tavern" called the Prussian Eagle near Wellclose Square.
http://www.mernick.org.uk/thhol/downeast.html
but I cant find this pub mentioned anywhere else and would like to know where it was.
the reference is a magazine article in 1872, but I cant find a listing on the 1871 census nor in the 1856 Post Office directory.
Perchance the mention is about the pub sign rather than the name of the pub, so any suggestions please as to what it might be.
cheers..Ed

There is quite a lot of mentions if you google
Prussian Eagle near Wellclose Square
apparently Ship Alley is the place.
Akkersdyk, John L
Born Westminster 1875.
1891: photographer living at 19 Ship Alley, Wellclose Square, St George in the East.
This address was the Prussian Eagle PH, of which Akkersdyk's father was the landlord.

Prussian Eagle
Mutley,
thanks for that- there is so much to learn about googling!! I put in Prussian Eagle, Stepney and got nothing- used German spelling and still did not come up with the reference that you did. it did not occur to me to say Prussian Eagle near Wellclose square. Oh well live and learn.
Cant imagine what you are doing up at this time in the morning in your parts.
Thanks again.
cheers..Ed

There are a few police reports for the period in The Times. One that maybe of interest states:
24 Oct 1891
"the Prussian Eagle, which was another name for the Angel and Crown"
In a Court report of March 1907 it is referred to as "the Angel and Crown (Prussian Eagle) Ship-alley, Stepney"
