Default Ann POWELL/MARTIN - Thoughts and Input

    Afternoon all,

Well i got up this morning to knock down a lead, which I thought i had done, but now not so sure if I am on the right lines.

Basically the year is 1848, Thomas MARTIN marries in March 1848 to Ann(e) Powell

On the marriage cert is says the following:

March 26th 1848, Brecknock, St Davids Parish Chruch
Thomas MARTIN (full age), Bach, Butcher, Silver Street, Thomas MARTIN, Butcher

Anne POWELL (full age), Splinter, - , Silver Street, John POWELL, Wagoner

Anne Martin (nee Powell) in 1851 Welsh census (3 years later) is recorded as being 27 living with Thomas as can be seen (Class: HO107; Piece: 2489; Folio: 522; Page: 10) and I can follow them right upto the end of their lives.

So I return to the 1841 to go backwards and to find John POWELL (Anne father), hopefully with Ann list, but I can't find anyone listed as a Wagoner, but I have come up with one that maybe possible.

1841 Welsh Census : Class: HO107; Piece 1366; Book: 7; Civil Parish: Llanelly; County: Breconshire; Enumeration District: 12; Folio: 42; Page: 9; Line: 9 but the occupation is listed as "Farmer", be it I know this was taken 7 years before the marriage. An Ann is listed and the data of birth appears to be correct.

Following this John POWELL on to 1851 Welsh Census, just after the wedding, I can see the job as "Farmer...can't make out 2nd word but it looks like Wagoner??

Is Wagoner also another name for a Farmer?
Do I appear to be on the right tracks?

My only concern is that this John POWELL appears to be in the parish/hundred of Crickhowell which appears to be some miles to the south east of Brecon. There are quite a few John POWELL's but finding one with an Ann POWELL of the right age, points so far to this one being the right one. However Ann claims on the 8151 to be born in St Marys parish of Brecon.

    Hi,
The John Powell Farmer in Crickhowell in 1851 is a " Farmer 12 acres" or at least that's what it looks like to me.

Waggoners worked on farms. The were the fore-runners of tractor drivers, although there are differences. If your John only had 12 acres and a waggon and horse(s) he might have also have hauled stuff for other farmers.

Ok, that could cause a few problems then as all the John Powells in the 1841/1851 Census appear to be Farmers (Typical), so this one I have found "could" be someone else, especially as there is a fair bit of distance between the 2 towns.

Certainly need to review the ones in the Brecon area again I think as Ann claims to be born in Brecon and not Crickhowell area.

Not sure how at this point I can find secondary sources, as finding a sibling will be quite hard.

    Hi Sandy,

That's very interesting indeed, certainly the right father in both cases, different mother options.

I need to find where Llanafanfawr is in relation to Brecon as my gut still says the Llanelly one is too far away.

I think you have most certainly found the right people, i just need to find if The Parish Church, St David in Brecon covered these areas, as far as I understand the wedding normally took place at the brides parish.

Llanafanfawr, appears to by builth wells, so that's looks unlikely, unless I can find a link why they would move from there to Brecon itself, seems unlikely.

Maybe Llanelly one is looking more likely :/

I have officially gone off the surname POWELL. It appears that there are more POWELLs than there are sheep in the hills of Brecon and everyone is a farmer

Did I miss the Brecon POWELL convention of 1825

Right. I have gone to the marriage cert for possible answers, especially witnesses. It was done under Banns for a start.

It's interesting that no witness was a Powell, instead those listed are William MARTIN, Mary Ann MARTIN (which I suspect are Thomas's siblings) and it appears John JOHNS, which I believe reads "Rector"

All the MARTINs signd by Mark, Anne POWELL and the rector signed themselves.

David Price was listed as "minister"

Anyone with thoughts that from this that may lead to possible leads? Was is unusual for 3 witness to be listed as rector?

Default The Martin Family of Brecon

Thomas Martin was the younger brother of my great-great-great-grandfather, William Martin. I would be interested in sharing information with you.
