    Default Another Handwriting Query

    Afternoon all,

Could someone take a look at Welsh 1871 Census (Class: RG10; Piece: 5580; Folio: 51; Page: 33) Household schedule number: 193 for Lucy MARTIN.

I am reading the Occupation as Domestic Servant. Is that correct?

I can't work out the street or house, apart from it's #2 something.

She seems to be with the Spriggs family, though it seems a little odd for her to be a servant for someone only a few years older than her, so I presume she just lives there. Oddly the Spriggs seem to be from all over country, and clearly quite well travelled for for such a young family. Anyone able to work out his occupation??

2 Moderator? Terrace (from description of Enumeration district)
And yes I think it does say Domestic Servant.

Don't think it's Moderator, though it appears to be in the Watton part of Brecon, which looking on maps appears to be east of the town. Can't find anything called Terrace atm.

Jonah is a newspaper editor and reporter.
    Lucy is a Domestic Servant.

It certainly looks like Moderator Terrace, even on the next page but maybe I am biased.

It certainly looks like Moderator Terrace - it's much clearer at the top of the next page. The Watton is the main street leading in to Brecon from the A40, although since the bypass was built I believe it is now the B4601. Presumably there were parts of it given Terrace names. My husband used to work at the Welsh Water offices on the Watton and can't remember it ever being called anything but that.

If you check the enumeration district description (St Marys district 13) it quite clearly looks like Moderator Terrace. 1881 has a Moderator Terrace in parish of Brecknock St John the Evangalist

In 1881 Jonah (now Josiah) has moved, shame!
He is still a newspaper editor with lots more little Spriggs.

Strangely, they now have a 15 year old servant called Eliza A Martin.
    Another of yours?

    Newspaper Editor...interesting

Lucy's father was running a Butchers in the town at the time. I wonder if he ran an advert in the very same newspaper, and maybe that's how Lucy got her job.

    That's worth some digging.

Well the nearest to it I have is one of Lucy's sisters called Elizabeth, born 1861, making her 20 at the time. However, there are quite a few Martin's so it's good chance if it's not a sibling, it's going to be a cousin.

    Definitely Domestic Servant.

    And definitely Moderator Terrace.
Some of the same people are in the same street - clearly written - in 1881.
