    Default Governor of Sierra Leone

My family tell me my ancestor Freddie Mathias was Governor of Sierra Leone.
He lived there with his wife Amelia Blanchard (born 1896 Godstone) througout the 1940s and perhaps until 1958.
    Amelia died in 1958

But there seem to have been NO governors in that period!
He did exist, for I met him at the Connaught, Park Lane (but assumed, stupidly, it would be easy to find out all about him later)
Many thanks if anyone can help - even to say "No governors then". Is there a similar position he could have had?

Impressive Carol: how on earth did you find that!
To me he was just "Uncle Freddie" - but he DID give me a piece of rock with the gold sparkling in it!
