    Default Lucas of Cassington

I'm hoping someone has access to the Cassington Parish Records and can help break down one of my brickwalls.

According to the 1841 and 1851 census for Little Compton, Henry Lucas was originally from Cassington, born approximately 1793. His wife was Mary unfortunately she died in 1849 just before the 1851 census so I don't know where she was from - if it's anything like other ancestors she could provide the Little Compton link.

I'm trying to identify Henry's parents and Mary's marriage and therefore maiden name if anyone can assist.

    Thanks

Have you seen this on the IGI

    HENRY LUCAS
Christening: 15 JUL 1792 Cassington, Oxford, England
    Father: LUCAS

    Not terribly useful though.

There are a few other Lucus's born in Cassington too, but not in the same decade as Henry.

    Default LUCAS family

    Hello Tank,

According to the Oxfordshire FHS PR Transcripts of Little Compton, the Mary LUCAS who died in 1849 was only 14 months old, so she was not your Mary. There is a burial 13 December 1845 of a Mary LUCAS, aged 55, who would appear to be a likely candidate as she is the only other Mary LUCAS to be buried between 1841 & 1851. There is also a burial for a Henry LUCAS, of Little Compton, on 6 December 1860.

There are the following baptisms for children of Henry & Mary at Little Compton:

21 February 1819 John LUCAS son Henry & Mary, Shoemaker, Little Compton
1 April 1821 Hannah LUCAS daughter Henry & Mary, Lab, Little Compton
21 November 1823 Thomas LUCAS son Henry & Mary, Cordwainer, Little Compton
2 October 1825 Emma LUCAS daughter Henry & Mary, Shoemaker, Little Compton
18 November 1827 Caroline LUCAS daughter Henry & Mary, Shoemaker, Little Compton
9 May 1830 Leah LUCAS daughter Henry & Mary, Cordwainer, Little Compton

There are the following LUCAS marriages which took place at Little Compton according to the PR Transcripts:

11 October 1838 Thomas DYER, full age, bach, labourer, Barton, son Robert, carpenter
& Sarah LUCAS, full age, spin, Little Compton, daughter Henry,
labourer by banns - both made their mark Witnesses: Richard
DYER & Eliza LUCAS - both made their mark

25 January 1845 John LUCAS, full age, bach, labourer, Little Compton, son Henry,
labourer & Charlotte SHIRLEY, full age, spin, Little Compton, daughter
William, labourer by banns - both made their mark. Witnesses:
John SHIRLEY & Eliza LUCAS - both made their mark

2 May 1852 John VICKES, full age, bach, labourer, Great Tew Oxon, son Thomas,
labourer & Caroline LUCAS, full age, spin, Little Compton, daughter
Henry, labourer by banns - both made their mark. Witnesses:
William SMITH & Leah LUCAS - both made their mark

William LUCAS was buried on 6 July 1859, aged 45.
Charlotte LUCAS (wife of John) was buried 23 November 1871, aged 45
Jane LUCAS (wife of William) was buried 16 September 1893, aged 71

It would appear that William LUCAS (their eldest son?) who appears on the 1841 census with the family was baptised somewhere else. According to the 1851 census of Little Compton, William was born c1813 at Shipston on Stour, so perhaps the marriage of Henry & Mary took place there as there is no record of a marriage taking place at Little Compton. Looking on the Phillimores Marriage Index for Shipston, there is no marriage listed for Henry & Mary up to 19 October 1812, so another dead end there.

HTH to fill in a little background info for you anyway.

More background information for you Tank. According to Hugh Wallis's IGI site, Henry and Mary had 3 children baptised at Shipston:

    William baptised 31 October 1813
    Sarah baptised 18 February 1816
    Jane baptised 6 April 1817

Interestingly, there is also the baptism of a George LUCAS at Shipston on 27 April 1794, father Thomas, mother Mary - could this be a relative of your Henry - perhaps a brother??

Henry and Mary obviously moved to Little Compton sometime between April 1817 and February 1819 and given that William was baptised at the end of October perhaps Henry and Mary did marry at Shipston sometime after 19 October 1812 - worth consideration definitely.

Thanks Sue and Janet, excellent assistance as always.

Tracing this far back is going to be a lot of guess work but that is really helpful. There was already a Shipston connection in Henry & Mary's daughter Emma eventually moved and died there so it seems there is a recurring theme and certainly gives me another avenue to investigate.

    Thanks a lot.
