Brilliant Carol! How did you do that?
I gather that Esq was almost "landed gentry" in those days

Some of the Bouch family obvioulsy moved into Railways. Having been at university in St.Andrew's I am very familiar both with the Tay Bridge and Waverley Station, so was very interested in reading about Sir Thomas Bouch of Thursby.

Mercantile Marine Service Association, Liverpool (Minute)
At a meeting of the council of the Mercantile Marine Service Association held at the offices of the association, 66 Tower Buildings, Water Street, Liverpool on Monday the 1st May 1865, Captain Benjamin Sproule in the chair, it was unanimously resolved (on the motion of Captain James W Jeffrey, seconded by Captain James R Rea) that this association desires to express in the strongest possible terms its deep feelings of sorrow and indignation at the recent foul assassination of Mr. Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America, and also at the diabolical attempt, made about the same hour, upon the lives of Mr. Secretary Seward and his son, Mr. Seward, the under secretary.Sue Mackay

Someone is whispering this in my ear. Is there any way to tell him to get lost - he is dead wrong?
He says "OK, here we are stuck at home with my Captain off in China somewhere - not back for months! But I always have "Uncle Benj" who has lived here with us for years?"
So in fact maybe nobody really knew who the father was - and one did have middle name Bouch.
Is there any way to demolish such a scarrulous suggestion?
