Question DUTFIELD or DUDFIELD Help needed please

    Good Morning Readers,

I have the Census details of my GtGrandfather for 1901/1891/1881/1871. He was from a boating family (Canals). His details show Place of Birth to be Tipton, Staffs in the 1901/91/81 census, but Congleton, Cheshire in the 1871 census! Either he didn't know where he was born, thought up a place or lied.

Also, in the 1871 census he was entered as DUDfield rather than DUTfield. I blame the Enumerator for that.

Anyway, I cannot find details for him for 1861/1851 or 1841.

Please, if anyone can help, would they consider doing a look up for him please? I know the above are all correct for certain, but have hit that brick wall!!

    Many thanks,

    S

    Hello Summerstorm,

I, too, cannot find him in either the 1851 or 61 census records. Do you have his marriage certificate to Maria? This should hopefully give his father's name and profession which might make tracing him in earlier census records somewhat easier. There is a marriage registration on FreeBMD in the June qtr 1869 at Dudley registration district (includes the parish of Tipton), vol 6c, page 54 for a James DUTFIELD and one of the other names on the page is that of a Maria MATTHEWS.

Good Morning and many thanks for answering so quickly!

I don't have a marriage cert but I DO know that James Dutfield married Maria Matthews 1869, April 19th in Dudley. The church I believe was St.Thomas, Dudley.

    Hello again Summerstorm,

I think you will have to purchase his marriage certificate to Maria to enable you to go any further backward. You can purchase this online at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ quoting the reference details I gave you for the cost of £7. This will give you the names and professions of the fathers of both bride and groom which will hopefully make tracing them in earlier census records somewhat easier.

Thanks for reply, Jan. Yes - it all gets a bit expensive though, all these £7 s all add up! I realise I really will need to go down that road though.

    Thanks again,

Wondering if the following has any connection to your James

    1881cens.St Oswalds,Cheshire RG11/3560 foilio 35 page 63

    "Boat Vixen"
Joseph Dudfield 78 widr. master Worcs Bewdley
Joseph ....... 27 unm Staffs Tipton
    Thomas Turton 26 ... .........Walsall

Cannot find on earlier census, but due to occupation, could have been out of enumerators
reach, as with quite a few of my boatmen.
