I'm guessing you meant to put this one in the Army section rather than RN?
Hopefully a mod will move it for you.
The rank abbreviation is presumably cpl (corporal) rather than cpt

Hi Sedgepea
ou would need to consult the medal roll held in W0100/119/255 to look up the Kimberley Vol Regt. There were 881 men from this unit involved in the defence of Kimberley.
Out of interest there was a Pte. IC Harries who served in the Kimberley Rifles during the uprisings in Transkei, Basutoland and Bechuanaland (1880-97). He was awarded the Cape of Good Hope General Service Medal with Bechuanaland clasp, this sounds as if it may be one of your men.
Regards
Martin

Hi Martin
Sorry I have been so long in replying. Thanks for the info but is any of this on the web? I cannot pay a researcher in England and I am in south Africa.

Hi Sedgepea
The best site I can recommend regarding the Boer War is linked below. This link will take you to the list of Defenders at the Seige of Kimberley, which includes both your men. Unfortunately there is very little specific personal information available on the site, but it might provide you with some clues as to where to look.

Thank you Martin,
I am not even sure that these are the correct people but it is a good place to start and I will take it from there but where to begin to trace their families or origins is a big problem, maybe the census. what do you think?
regards Sedgepea
