    Default Spelling of a county

    Hello im looking at a relatives 1911 census and they were born in Ireland on all previous census. with the 1911 census 'where born' is written as Limench Iland, resident. does this mean Limerick Ireland and they are a resident of the UK??

    I'd have thought Limerick Ireland was a fairly safe bet.

    Yes, they are resident in the UK. The heading to column 14 reads:

    Note. - In the case of persons born elsewhere than in England or Wales, state whether "Resident" or "Visitor" in this Country.

    In any case, Ireland was part of the UK in 1911

    Looks like a bad transcription of Limerick to me. Southern Ireland did not gain independence from The UK until 1927 so at the time of the 1911 census your man would have been a subject of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

    Default Origins of Iland

    My mother who was descended from Richard Iland said the the Ilands were originally named Ireland and the spelling changed when they moved to England before moving to Australia. They were originally from Killcooley in Tipperary but being Catholic lost their land following the famine and moved to Limerick for work where they lived for a long time. She said all male first- borns were known as Richard. I will try to find the name in Tipperary records if they exist.
