Looks like Carman to me.

If you stick carman into the search box on the forum, the occupation is described in detail on several threads

The up-and-down stroke in the middle of the word with the letter next to it looks like fs - the way a double s used to be written.

So, working backwards, it looks like *resser. The - just below and to the left of the word Hair could possibly be because the person recording the occupation ran out of room on that line. That would explain why the word *resser is not written with a capital letter.

Have you tried looking at the 1871 census for him? His occupation might be listed there (assuming he had the same job) and hopefully clearer.

Thank you everybody for your help. The groom's surname is Brayne ( my Great Grandfather ) I use the site Genes Reunited for my census search but I have found out from my other thread that it appears not to be very reliable. As a matter of interest,which site do you suggest to be very accurate with census records?
I am quite happy to accept Hairdresser as the answer to my query. Once again many thanks.
