Without the context, it is difficult to say. What is the full entry, please?

May also be an abbreviation for Yeoman - as Jan says, without the original context, it is hard to give an answer...

The entry reads:
1783 4th Novemeber Stephen Vertue ym son of John (coalmeter)

Now, John was married to Sarah 27\4\1761 and had another son born 1767 but as yet haven't found John birth but at the outside he is unlikely to be older than 22 - so I guess it could be wither yeoman (whcih was my original thought but then other enteries had inf. or ch. next to them. There are three other Vertue children that died in '76, '76 & '78, all infants. ah! The fact that coalmeter was written in full one wonder that yeoman wouldn't also be written in full. All comments welcome. Thanks

This is the extract pasted from the Woodbridge files, as you can see there is a semi colon after the ym not linked with the so of etc etc........ didn't want to copy anymore re: copyright.

Ah, given enough time one works it out! Have a look at this, again pasted from same records,

now I think this is a young woman? What do you think? Every occupation is written in full, i.e wheelwright, plumber, pensioner to name just three.

Copyright? Is this a transcript you're quoting? I thought it was a parish register

If it's a transcript, I would suggest that you ask the publisher of the transcript and/or examine the original register.
