    Default Shoemaker/cordwainer

My gg grandfather John Hedley (1796-1840) of Snitter, Northumberland is recorded as a shoemaker on his death certificate and also on the marriage certificate of one of his sons. However on the marriage certificate of his eldest son his occupation is given as 'hainer' which may mean that he was a cordwainer. I have been unable to trace his antecedents although a clue relating to one of his sons in the 1861 census for Northumberland suggests that he may have been born in the parish of Birtley. An entry in one of W Percy Hedley's notebooks suggests that there are records of cordwainer apprenticeships. I cannot find anything in the Northumberland archives.
