    Question Charlotte Constance Brooke

    Born abt 1878
She married Benjamin Wingate Barrow, later Rear Admiral, and died in South Africa.
I suspect she was the daughter of Richard Brooke Archdeacon of Cape Town - can anyone check this for me please?

The 1934 Who's Who entry for Benjamin Wingate Barrow describes his wife Charlotte Constance as "d. of late Ven. Richard Brooke".

The title Venerable would fit with the post of Archdeacon.

If you need anything more it would be worth checking her father's details on the 1908 marriage certificate.

    Thanks Hughar,
I have now found her baptism too - at one of the sites recommended by Sue.

    Default Benjamin Wingate Barrow

I also have a family history of the family of Benjamin Wingate Barrow, including his link to the Wingate family, particularly his cousin Orde Charles Wingate.

Indeed Sue - I have sent PM to Tony.
I think I need to start a map of where all the different branches of my tree have spread to - I found another in Australia this week and a S.African connection on the in-laws side, just need to track down the ones who went to Canada.

Default Brooke family in South Africa

Hi. The www is amazing. I have found that Google Chrome is much more effective than Internet Explorer, hence my success today.

You may want to research my mother's cousin Phyllida Brooke-Simons, very old (with a fine brain that operates best in the early evening) who has documented aspects of the Brooke family and its various connections, good and bad. I can put you in touch. Her son, Richard, is also following in her footsteps.

I am doing this as part of a family project, but also for a book, which is in its final draft before submission to publisher. Let me know if you wish to look at the draft.

Very interesting to hear about the trades related background of the Brookes. The Barrows were very snobbish, and the relationship to the Wingates made it worse. The Brookes became distinguised in Cape Town society through the church connection.

Interestingly, my mother married 'down' to a tradesman, builder, and this caused no end of family issues, hence my book. History has its ironies.

    Regards

    Tony

Anthony, I was very interested in your posts as I am researching Wingates, and your grandparents Benjamin Wingate Barrow and Charlotte Constance Brooke are both on my tree. I would be interested to compare notes as I am lacking a number of details on the Barrows; equally I may have Wingate material which could possibly be of interest to you.

As this is getting off the line of the original subject I will get in direct touch via the private message system, if that's agreeable to you.

    Best regards, Alan
